Art Grades K-8

The art program at St. Rose School has always been one of appreciation for the art all around us in God's awesome world.

  • ART CRITICISM - Making a close observation of the art, noting color, line , shape, etc...
  • ART HISTORY - Where did the art come from; why was it created and by whom?
  • AESTHETICS - Making some judgments about the fine art of the day or the students’ own personal art...
  • ART PRODUCTION - Let's make our own art!!

These are the four foundations of our curriculum, ensuring that the California State Standards in Art are being addressed.

Multicultural art (i.e. Australian Aboriginal dot art) and current art topics (i.e. the animated Google Doodles as seen on the Google sign-in page) are two areas of art education that are emphasized in our program. Most of our art lessons have a cross curricular component, for example, a lesson in Desertscapes, a watercolor sunset background with black silhouette saguaro cactus and desert animals. This may include a science lesson on the flora and fauna of the desert habitat. Music, drama, and even dance art forms are additions to an appropriate art curriculum. The students are encouraged to relax a little in art class, express themselves in a non-judgmental atmosphere, and, most importantly, to enjoy the JOURNEY in art.

Music Grades K-5

The St. Rose School music program is a multi-faceted designed to provide a broad repertoire of musical pieces and theory as well as skills for children at age appropriate levels. It includes classroom-based learning and extra-curricular activities.

Grades 1 and 2 - Students are introduced, through both listening and participation, to music theory through simple songs that teach them the note names, tempos and musical dynamics. They also learn more about music through their friend, Freddie the Frog!

Grade 3 - Students begin to learn more about music and expand their musical knowledge through learning how to play the soprano recorder.

Grade 4 and 5 - Students build on their previous experiences and are introduced to basic music theory and history. They add to their knowledge of music through theory workbooks and classroom participation.

Physical Education

Grades Kindergarten-3

Our Program focuses on three major areas that contribute to one’s physical health and well being:

Movement Concepts. The program emphasizes the variety of ways to travel (e.g. running, skipping, hopping), as well as changes of direction and speeds, different ways to balance, jump and land, spacial awareness, chasing, fleeing, dodging, and body awareness.

Skill Themes. Basic skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, volleying, dribbling, tumbling activities, and rhythmic movements, are emphasized in each class period.

Wellness Concepts. The wellness concepts taught throughout the year include healthy and unhealthy foods, and the components of fitness which are muscular strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance.

Grades 4-8

Physical education is an integral part of the educational program for all students. It teaches students how their bodies move, how to perform a variety of physical activities, the health-related benefits of regular physical activity, and specific skills that will allow them to adopt a physically active, healthy lifestyle. It also provides learning experiences that meet the developmental needs of students. With physical education, students become confident, independent, self-controlled, and resilient; develop positive social skills; learn to set and strive for personal, achievable goals; learn to assume leadership, cooperate with others, and accept responsibility for their own behavior; and improve their academic performance.

There are five overall model content standards for elementary and middle school children.

  • Demonstrate motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies as they apply to learning and performance of physical activities.
  • Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.
  • Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as applied to learning and performance of physical activity.

In grades 4 and 5, the specific content standards emphasize how students move in their environment, moving through space and time, how they (student and a partner) move in space together, continuity and change in movement, manipulating objects in time and through space, and manipulating objects with accuracy and speed. In grades 6,7, and 8, the specific content standards emphasize working cooperatively to achieve a common goal, meeting challenges and making decisions, and working as a team to solve problems.

Spanish Language Grades K-8

¡Hola y Bienvenidos!

The primary goal of the St. Rose School Spanish Program is to introduce the students to basic Spanish and to get the students ready for Spanish 1 in high school.  Students in Kindergarten through sixth grade attend Spanish classes one day each week and students in grades seven, eight attend Spanish classes two days each week.

Students will be introduced to a full range of Spanish vocabulary, the nuance of conversational Spanish language, spelling and sentence structure. The students will learn the Sign of the Cross, and foundational Catholic prayers. In conjunction with language instruction, our students are exposed to the richness of Spanish culture and tradition.
